BMOD at the Maryland Offsite Accelerator and Strategy Workshop
On September 22 and 23, the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) convened the Maryland Offsite Accelerator and Strategy Workshop at Loyola University in Baltimore. Secretary Jake Day opened the workshop, part of DHCD’s ongoing work to increase modular (offsite, factory-built) housing production and address Maryland’s housing shortage.
Two of BMOD’s research collaborators from Morgan State University attended the event: Brent Sturlaugson, RA, who leads BMOD’s existing-conditions data collection and research, and Ziping Wang, PhD, who leads our supply chain analysis.
We’re glad to see MOD X’s expertise shared with a broader Maryland audience. MOD X led the stakeholder engagement sessions for the EPA Thriving Communities planning grant that funded the BMOD project,* and the workshop builds on that groundwork. Many of the stakeholders who joined BMOD’s EPA workshops over the past year took part as well.
We thank Secretary Day and the DHCD team for convening the workshop, and we look forward to supporting the State as this strategy moves into action.

* For the project titled “Baltimore Modular (BMOD)”, Christina D. Long, Ethan Cohen, Brent Sturlaugson, and Kamalesh Panthi served as subcontractors to the Maryland Center for Construction Education and Innovation (MCCEI) under the EPA Thriving Communities Grant administered through Green & Healthy Homes Initiative (GHHI). In this capacity, BMOD team members provided leadership on research, design, technology, and community and stakeholder engagement in support of the BMOD project, which focuses on offsite construction strategies for housing revitalization and workforce development in Baltimore.
